What’s a salt lamp?

Rock salt lamps are made from salt crystals that are millions of years old. Some date as far back as 250 million years, from the Himalayan Mountain regions. The salt crystals come in shades of pink, orange, reds, and even white. Salt lamps are simply large pieces of these crystals, with a small light inside.

How does it work?

Himalayan salt lamps are known to have healing abilities. When the lamp warms up, it absorbs moisture and becomes damp on the surface. This is what builds up the ion field.

Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps

Known as the “vitamins of the air”, salt lamps have many benefits. Not only do they work as air purifiers, they release negative ions when lit, cleaning the air and fighting off bacteria (which often carry a positive charge). Negative ions increase oxygen flow, which can help improve your mood and alertness.

Beaches also have negative ions, which is why most of us feel amazing when we’re visiting the Coast! Putting your toes in the sand, listening to the crashing of the waves, it’s all very therapeutic, isn’t it? Since we can’t be at the beach all day, why not bring the benefits of the beach home to us?

Salt lamps are made from pure food grade Himalayan salt, which means you technically could crush the salt up and use it on your dinner. However, they’re also really pretty, so your best bet is to use them for purifying the air and brightening your space instead of flavoring your meals.

The lit salt crystals naturally clear the air of allergens such as smoke, pollen, and pet dander. Oftentimes, it helps with reducing asthma symptoms. While not proven, salt lamp users have claimed they have helped with morning sickness, autism, and even reducing snoring.

You can use them at your home, in your office, and many folks even use them in their children’s bedrooms. They make great night lights, and are also great to use during meditation.
