Not Your Mama’s Brownies Recipe

Ooey gooey brownies without the guilt
Cara’s Flour Blends are used in this and other recipes in this cookbook.   The recipes for Cara’s All-Purpose Blend and Cara’s Special Blend are available when you purchase this book.
Makes 12 large brownies
1 1/4 cup (125 g) Cara’s Flour Blend
1/4 cup (24 g) black been flour (if you cannot find this flour,
simply replace with more flour blend)
1 1/4 cup (250 g) sugar
1/4 c (25 g) cocoa powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup (57 g) + 2 tbsp (28 g) applesauce
1/4 cup (60 ml) melted dark chocolate, cooled
1/4 cup (60 ml) vegetable oil
1/4 cup (60 ml) boiling water
Optional Add-ins:
1/2 cup (57 g) walnuts
1/2 cup (90 g) vegan chocolate chips
Preheat your oven to 350 F/176 C. Grease an 8″x8″ brownie pan. Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder and salt together in a large mixing bowl.
Pour applesauce, oil, and melted chocolate into the dry ingredients and stir with a wodden spoon until almost combined. The batter will be a bit difficult to fully mix together–you want this. Slowly add the boiling water until the batter becomes more manageable. You want it to be thick enough to be able to still stir but not thin enough where it’s runny.
Place in pan and bake for 35-40 minutes.

  1. Yum! I always love finding guilt-free desserts! These look just like fudge, so I know they must be good! Thanks for sharing!

  2. WOW! These look so rich and delicious. More and more non-wheat flours are becoming readily available. I’ve never heard of black bean flour though. I’m going to hunt some down and try this recipe. Thanks for sharing the recipe and cookbook review.
