The Warm Kitchen Review

My Dairy-Free Gluten-Free Life was contacted to review The Warm Kitchen by Amy Fothergill.  The Warm Kitchen is a Gluten-Free Cookbook that also has over 150 recipes with Dairy and Egg Substitutions!  I was pleasantly surprised at the wonderful recipes in this book.  Somehow I thought it would be focused on bakery items, which it does have many wonderful recipes for.  But there are yummy recipes for main dishes for Pastas ( Gluten-Free ), Beef, Chicken, Fish and Seafood.   I will be cutting down on animal meats since they just seem to make my gut not function correctly.

Amy has sections for stocking your pantry which I feel is a must for anyone who is changing their diet.  She has tips on Cooking Gluten Free also.  She lists her favorite flours and what each is used for, which is a big help for me.  All I know is that I need to replace wheat with something and knowing what Millet, Sorghum, Teff or other flours are best used for is such a bonus.  I was thrilled that Amy also has a section on gluten-free bread machine recipes as well!  I also like that she shares “how-to” make dairy free buttermilk and sour cream.   But she has many dairy free substitutes listed for easy help.

I was visiting a friend in Fairbanks a couple weeks ago and it was COLD, like -29 degrees below 0 cold.   I felt like we needed some comfort food and so I made us the recipe in Amy’s The Warm Kitchen for Chicken-Like Pot Pie.   I made some substitutions making this a dairy-free and meat free Pot Pie since it was already Gluten-Free!  You can see my recipe here.   It was delicious!  I will be making that again.   I am also anxious to try many of her recipes such as Kasha, Sage and Raisin Stuffing, Chard and Quinoa Salad, Thai Peanut Noodles and so many more!

I am just beginning my gluten free journey(we’re still eating whatever is in the house so we can start fresh when I buy gluten free), I’ve been Lactuse intolerant all my life though. I don’t have any gluten free recipes yet but I can’t wait to start trying them.

I make it easy, and just make a big salad so I don’t have to think about it
