More on Vitamin D & Autism
In my last post about Vitamin D & Autism I had mentioned a family member was waiting for the 25(OH)D blood test. This test has come back and is low despite him taking 2,000 IU Vitamin D3 daily. So his Vitamin D dose was increased and will be monitored. He is having speech and occupational therapy evaluations for autism spectrum. Despite him testing high for a probability for being on the Autism Spectrum, he has not been given that diagnosis yet. Here is some info on the best foods for Vitamin D.
I will update everyone and hopefully our story will help someone else who may be experiencing similar symptoms with a sweet young child. I will mention again that “The Vitamin D Council suggests you can safely give 50 mcg (2,000 IU) of Vitamin D daily but you want to make sure you use cholecalciferol and not ergocalciferol. In fact, the U.S. government says this dose is safe for children over the age of one. But Beware of cod liver oil—do not use it because vitamin A inhibits the actions of activated vitamin D and there is a potential for low-grade vitamin A toxicity. And you want a doctor to order a 25(OH)D blood test every 2–3 months to make sure Vitamin D blood levels are between 50–80 ng/ml and kept there, summer and winter.”
Dr Cannell has posted a new paper on Vitamin D & Autism.
Dr Cannell formed the Vitamin D Council which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, working to educate the public on vitamin D, sun exposure and health.
I am just going to share a few highlights of Dr Cannell’s Post ” New paper: Autism, will vitamin D treat core symptoms? ” May 29, 2013
Since Dr Cannell made 16 points on Autism and Vitamin D, I will only mention a few and you can click on the source below to get the whole article.
When I had children there was not much talk of Autism. Dr Cannell makes the point that “Autism is not a subtle disease and thus the diagnosis would not have been missed in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. This means the epidemic is real and not just due to better detection. To further clarify this point, many parents these days spend thousands of dollars to find treatments for their autistic child. If autism was truly prevalent 40-plus years ago, parents would have gone the same lengths then as they do now. But this wasn’t the case.” It is further concluded that it is a gradual onset of symptoms beginning during the first 2 – 3 years of life.
One theory is that something is happening environmentally that interacts with genetic susceptibility during the first 12 -24 months of life and not exclusively during pregnancy. Many toddlers of this age group do not drink milk, they avoid the sun and they do not take Vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D plays a huge role in Brain development, so it seems likely to me that without adequate Vitamin D.. proper Brain programming may go array during the developmental years of a child.
But my personal hypothesis is that the something environmental is the genetic modification (GMO) of our foods to the point that it has invaded the manufactured baby foods and formulas as well as our whole food system and this has had an effect upon our children. You can check out some of my posts on GMO’s while you are here.
I hope that enough documentation can be gathered so a large study can be done to find answers to why there is such a rise in Autism in the last 40 years and find a CURE!
